6th grade students created The Museum of Quarantine to show what the last year has been like for them. Many focused on masks, staying six feet apart, the toilet paper shortage and missing friends/family. Several blessings were also mentioned such as new pets, learning a new hobby and an increase in faith. The museum is currently set up in the wrestling room for students to walk through and read what their classmates had to share.

Spring Greetings!
It is hard to believe that we will be celebrating the 20th Spring Fling this year! The Spring Fling has surely evolved since its inception two decades ago only utilizing half of the Convocation Center Gym for dinner and a small auction. This wonderful event has grown into an outstanding fundraiser for Norwalk Catholic School as well as a community builder for our Flyer Families. We have cruised the evening on a riverboat, welcomed the circus into town, partied like we were in the Roaring 20's, took a dive under the sea, won it big in Las Vegas, and auctioned from a baseball diamond. We love hearing about the stories and memories created at past Spring Fling events. Please share them with us at this milestone.
As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Spring Fling, just as we did in 2020, we will be hosting the event virtually in hopes to see all of you again in person in 2022. This year's event will once more be presented through GiveSmart and the live auction portion will be live streamed through Facebook and YouTube with our wonderful MC Skip Wilde and a special co-host for 2021. We hope that you, your family, and friends will join us virtually on Saturday, May 8th for a night of delicious food, abundant bidding, various raffles, and countless laughs as we celebrate and raise funds towards the excellent catholic education that we offer at Norwalk Catholic School and St. Paul High School.
Truly Yours,
The Spring Fling Committee
To register for the event and to pre-order your dinner from Catering by Design for Saturday, May 8th head over to: www.SpringFling2021.GiveSmart.com .

Thank you to St. Joseph Catholic School Monroeville for visiting the St. Paul High School Campus today. Deacon Mike Wasiniak brought the 6, 7 and 8th grade students to see what being a Flyer is all about! Deacon Mike was excited to show the students his previous classroom where he was instrumental in the set-up of the aquariums for the marine biology program at the school. We hope the graduating 8th graders will join our Flyer family for the 21-22 school year!

Third graders have been learning all about economics in their social studies class. They also read an entire novel about the topic called "The Lemonade War" in reading. After learning about the topic, they created their own business from scratch. They dealt with scarcity, opportunity cost, and more! All their hard work paid off, when they got to sell their products in their classroom market day!

Congratulations to St. Paul Head Boys Basketball Coach Mike Smith as he announces his retirement from coaching after 32 years as a head coach and 5 years as an assistant coach all at St. Paul High School.
Please take a moment to read the attached letter from Coach Mike Smith:
"To the St. Paul Community,
The time has come for me to step down from my position as head basketball coach at St. Paul High School. Although this decision has no way been an easy one. The reason is very simple- after 32 years running the basketball program, it’s just time.
The job has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I’ve been blessed in so many ways and have worked with some truly terrific people. The administrators at St. Paul have been great starting with the people that hired me 32 years ago. Dennis Doughty and Ruth Weisenberger. They took a chance on a young 22 year old and I will be forever grateful for that. Having John Livengood for our athletic director has made my job one of the best. He is the rock that has made St. Paul athletics what it is today. He is a tremendous leader in our school system.
To my entire family starting with my wife Kelly, my son’s Connor & Treg, my daughters Elizabeth & Danielle along with my parents Milton and the late Lois Smith. They have sacrificed so much in allowing me to pursue my passion for coaching. They have been unbelievably supportive. They made wins more exciting and losses less painful and without them I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I hope they are as proud of me as I am of them.
Obviously a head basketball coach is only as good as the assistant coaches that are in the program. I have been so blessed to be around some of the finest men I’ve ever met while coaching at St. Paul. I consider them family. It’s no wonder our young men have been successful in basketball and the game of life. Our coaches have truly demonstrated what it means to be men of integrity and I am proud of the way they lead by example. They have sacrificed time with their families to work with our young men and make them better basketball players and people. I want to thank you all for everything you have done through the years. It’s greatly appreciated.
Finally, to the players past and present- you made this job fun!! What a joy it has been to watch you grow not only during your time in our program, but after graduation too. St. Paul basketball has been built on the backs of so many hardworking young men and I take great comfort and pride in knowing that being hardworking, tough, dedicated, humble, and coachable are all attributes that will carry you on to being successful people, husbands, and fathers. I thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. It’s been a great, fun ride. One I will never forget.
Thank you St. Paul for allowing me to do what I love for so long. I will always bleed Red & Black.
Mike Smith
St. Paul Boys Basketball Coach 1989-2021"
Thank you Coach Smith for all that you have done for the St. Paul High School Basketball program! We will forever be grateful for your dedication to our school community. Forever a Flyer!

Last week our first graders learned how the Kingdom of God is like the yeast. After hearing the bible story, they went into the kitchen where they got to hold yeast, help kneed it into bread, and then see it rise. Afterwards they got to compare two loaves of bread, one with yeast and one without. It was easy to see which loaf represented the Kingdom of God and of which one they wanted to belong!

Thank you to all the families who participated in the PTOs Virtual Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math (S.T.R.E.A.M.) Event. As seen by the pictures, students from P3-6th grade enjoyed the hands-on activities of creating a constellation in a jar, exploring the moon phase with Oreo cookies, and creating a galaxy pinwheel. Students also enjoyed the Blast Off into Space Escape Room that challenged their math and vocabulary skills. Thank you to Leslie Kline and Sarah Kovarik for your coordination and collaboration on this event!

The second graders have spent a lot of time this year talking about lambs! First in the parable of the Lost Sheep and most recently in talking about Jesus being the Lamb of God. Mrs. Welter so graciously offered to bring in a lamb for them to see and pet. It was a very special reminder of both of their upcoming sacraments! The third graders even got to come down later on, as well, since they missed this special presentation last year due to quarantine.

A testimonial from one of our Friends for the Future committee members, Brendan Roberts (SPH '06). Pictured above is Brendan with his wife, Samantha and daughter, Kennedy.
"Sue asked me to be a part of FFF in late summer of 2019. To be honest, I almost deleted her voicemail but I was, and still am trying to be the person that says "yes" to more things. I also was in somewhat of a mental rut, so I figured it would be a nice change and afford me the chance to give back to the place I called home for the first 18 years of my life. My first year on FFF was not a typical one. COVID-19 came on the scene just before the annual phon-a-thon, so we had to adapt on the fly and come up with ways to meet and achieve our financial goal while the world was shutting down. Sometimes being forced out of our comfort zones shows us how capable we really are. Despite a global pandemic that is still raging, we actually surpassed the goal we set as a committee last year. It has been great to be part of a team that works quietly behind the scenes to make NCS the most affordable Catholic school in the area, if not one of the most affordable in the state.
Looking back on my years at Norwalk St. Paul, I'm reminded of the great times I had with my friends and classmates. I was able to experience some big things. Such as competing for a state championship in football back in 2004, even though we lost. Also, things like traveling down to Dayton with my friends to watch the volleyball team compete at the state championships multiple years. The mere 3 minutes between classes that somehow provided FAR MORE entertainment than it should have. Being able to connect with my classmates on a deeper level at our annual class retreats that seemed to energize us.............for about a day. There are obviously many more great memories stored away in my mind, too many to list in this short paragraph. I hope through our work at FFF, we can provide the current generation with the same great experiences that my friends and I were able to have. "

Our Friends for the Future phone-a-thon is quickly approaching. You can help make this event successful by picking up the phone and pledging a gift to NCS. Busy on the days when calls will be made? Feel free to give your gift at the following link: https://www.norwalkcatholicschool.org/donate

This week the 4 year olds in Miss Nardecchia and Mrs Griffins class learned about artists. Before the week started they voted between the topic of artists or habitats. Since artists won, they learned about Picasso, Matisse, Seurat, Kandinsky, and Michelangelo. They painted with dots like Seurat and made art with shapes like Kandinsky. They learned that Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. They drew pictures under tables to see what it was like for Michelangelo. The students decided there was no way he was comfortable and it had to be very hard for him.

All of the kindergarteners have been learning about what makes a strong sentence. They made sentence buddies in language arts class to remember the important parts of a sentence. They learned that every sentence needs a cap...capital letter at the beginning, shoes... punctuation at the end, and arms... a verb and a noun. Without one of these parts, it would not be a good sentence! The kindergarteners have spent the first quarter learning about letters, letter sounds, capitalization, punctuation, verbs, and nouns. Mrs. Gioffre is so proud of how much they have learned so far! They did a great job making their sentence buddies! They hang in the hallways and in the classrooms as a reminder for when they are working on their writing.

Mrs. Zendejas' and Mrs. Stoll's 4 year old preschool classes adopted a soldier to pray for this Veterans Day. Each child got to pick out two toy soldiers that had a name of an active duty soldier or a Veteran attached to it. They are encouraged to pray for their soldier and even write to their soldier if they choose to. We also sent a picture to the soldier with the child that adopted them with a handmade card and words of encouragement. This was a great project for the kids and for Mrs. Zendejas as she is a proud Vietnam Veteran daughter!

Mrs. Zendejas' and Mrs. Stoll's classes went down on the farm. What great fun it was to "herd" the pigs and sheep back into their pens, "shear" a sheep, feed the horses and tend to the chicken coop. The children were also able to see an egg experiment. What happens when an egg is put in vinegar and another in water? It was fun to discover that the egg in the vinegar became rubbery after sitting in the vinegar for four days but they also discovered that when the egg was thrown on the ground, the yolk splattered farther than the egg that was in the water. The children also got to witness the crows eating the eggs on the ground. It was fun for all!

I graduated from Bowling Green State University with a major in Early Childhood Education, and completed the 4th and 5th grade endorsement. I have played volleyball my entire life and my team won the state championship my senior year at Huron High School. Since then, I have been coaching at St. Paul for the past four years. I am very passionate about the game and enjoy sharing that passion with my players. I spent my childhood growing up in Collins but moved to Huron a few years ago where I currently reside. In my spare time, you can find me with my family, friends, or playing with my dog, Herm. I recently got engaged to my boyfriend, Tyler of 4 years. We are planning on getting married in the fall of 2022. I am so excited to meet my students and jump start my career!

Are you spending more time at home and looking for something to do? Do you have little ones at home looking to be creative? Participate in our Community Art Drive!
We've gotten several questions on how the community can show their appreciation for our local health care heroes or cheer up patients and residents at Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Norwalk Memorial Home, and the Carriage House. In order to minimize contact and practice social distancing, we’re excited to be doing a virtual art drive. Creations can be sent to ArtDrive@ftmc.com and they will be printed and displayed in various locations at Fisher-Titus. Some ideas to get you started are:
◊ Sidewalk chalk drawings
◊ Uplifting cards
◊ Window displays
Pose for a photo with your art or snap a photo of your creation on its own. We can’t wait to see what you come up with and we are so grateful for the support our community has shown us these last few weeks! Thank you!

Good Afternoon Flyer Family,
This afternoon Governor Dewine closed schools through May 1st with the expectation online learning would continue. This action has been taken to keep as many people safe and healthy as possible. We at Norwalk Catholic School are working to provide a detailed update later this week. Please know all of us are working tirelessly to provide support as best we can as we practice social distancing. As teachers make a good faith effort to provide instruction for our students, I ask students to continue to make a good faith effort in engaging in the learning the teachers are providing. Expectations for online learning will also be updated as part of this extended closure. Please pray for the health, healing, and safety of all people.
