This week the 4 year olds in Miss Nardecchia and Mrs Griffins class learned about artists. Before the week started they voted between the topic of artists or habitats. Since artists won, they learned about Picasso, Matisse, Seurat, Kandinsky, and Michelangelo. They painted with dots like Seurat and made art with shapes like Kandinsky. They learned that Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. They drew pictures under tables to see what it was like for Michelangelo. The students decided there was no way he was comfortable and it had to be very hard for him.

All of the kindergarteners have been learning about what makes a strong sentence. They made sentence buddies in language arts class to remember the important parts of a sentence. They learned that every sentence needs a cap...capital letter at the beginning, shoes... punctuation at the end, and arms... a verb and a noun. Without one of these parts, it would not be a good sentence! The kindergarteners have spent the first quarter learning about letters, letter sounds, capitalization, punctuation, verbs, and nouns. Mrs. Gioffre is so proud of how much they have learned so far! They did a great job making their sentence buddies! Mrs. Zendejas' and Mrs. Stoll's 4 year old preschool classes adopted a soldier to pray for this Veterans Day. Each child got to pick out two toy soldiers that had a name of an active duty soldier or a Veteran attached to it. They are encouraged to pray for their soldier and even write to their soldier if they choose to. We also sent a picture to the soldier with the child that adopted them with a handmade card and words of encouragement. This was a great project for the kids and for Mrs. Zendejas as she is a proud Vietnam Veteran daughter!

11TH ANNUAL NCS EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER VIRTUAL TURKEY TROT!
JOIN US VIRTUALLY THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2020 at 6:30 pm
Due to COVID, this year’s ECC Turkey Trot will be 100% virtual. What does that mean? Well, it means that we need to do things a little differently while still being able to carry on the tradition of giving away turkeys! How this year’s Turkey Trot will be run is by bringing in items that will be donated to the Norwalk food bank. For each item that your ECC child donates, they will get a ticket with their name on it to put in a hopper for the chance to win a turkey. On Thursday, November 19th, we will be going LIVE with the drawing!
A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO NORWALK CATHOLIC SCHOOL PTO FOR THE GENEROUS DONATIONS OF THE TURKEYS.

TIME SENSITIVE: As many of you have heard, Lydia Ott, a 2014 St. Paul High graduate, had recently suffered from multiple brain aneurysms and is fighting for her life at Metro Hospital in Cleveland. She was a great basketball player for the Lady Flyers. Coach Mahl and Coach Lantz (Shelby High School) are dedicating the upcoming Foundation game on Tuesday, November 10th at Shelby High School to Lydia. All ticket sales and any 50/50 proceeds will all go towards Lydia’s medical expenses.
To register, please go to https://www.biddingowl.com/Auction/home.cfm?auctionID=24711. This is Lydia’s personal fundraising page. At the top right you can register to bid and then start placing bids or buying raffle tickets. Once you are registered, you will have a chance to bid on at least 7 silent auction baskets. These silent auction items are available to bid on right now until the start of the varsity game on Tuesday, where the winners will be announced for who has won each basket. If you win and are not present to take the basket, we will arrange a pick-up or delivery. It’s really that easy!
There is also a fantastic opportunity to win a Fisher’s Farm Market Variety Meat Bundle, valued at over $350.00. This is a raffle that has limited tickets available, so don’t wait to purchase yours. We will be extending this raffle through November and will be drawing the winning ticket at the Tiffin Calvert game at St. Paul on Friday, November 27th. Winner does NOT need to be present to win. Mrs. Zendejas' and Mrs. Stoll's classes went down on the farm. What great fun it was to "herd" the pigs and sheep back into their pens, "shear" a sheep, feed the horses and tend to the chicken coop. The children were also able to see an egg experiment. What happens when an egg is put in vinegar and another in water? It was fun to discover that the egg in the vinegar became rubbery after sitting in the vinegar for four days but they also discovered that when the egg was thrown on the ground, the yolk splattered farther than the egg that was in the water. The children also got to witness the crows eating the eggs on the ground. It was fun for all!

I live in the Mansfield/Ontario area with my wife, our two children (Parker and Emma), and our two dogs (Quincy and Teddy). I am very excited to return to Norwalk Catholic School to teach Science after previously teaching here from 2010 -2015. After leaving Norwalk St. Paul in 2015, I continued to teach for the Toledo Catholic Diocese at my home parish of Mansfield St. Peter's in 2016. Since then, I have been a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Science Education at The Ohio State University's College of Education and a University Supervisor of Field Experiences and Internships at Ashland University. I have always felt that NCS is a very special place, and I am blessed to have the opportunity to return. I am truly honored to be teaching Physics and Chemistry, along with Anatomy and Physiology and AP Biology.

New Teacher Spotlight! Please join us in welcoming Miss. Riley Conway who will be in the 6th grade classroom. Here is a short message from Miss. Conway: I was born and raised in Norwalk and attended Norwalk Catholic Schools from Pre-K through 12th grade. I am beyond excited to return home, and to begin working as a 6th grade teacher at NCS. I am a graduate from the University of Toledo with a degree in Middle Childhood Education. In my free time I enjoy walking my dogs, painting, knitting, and other creative or crafting activities.

New Teacher Spotlight! Please join us in welcoming Miss. Sydney Moore who will be in the 4th grade classroom. Here is a short message from Miss. Moore: Hello! My name is Sydney Moore and I am a 2019 Graduate of Heidelberg University. Previously, I was teaching 3rd grade at Rosary Cathedral Catholic School in Toledo, Ohio. This summer, I decided to make the move back home and am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work for my Alma Mater, Norwalk Catholic School (2015). I’ve grown up my entire life in the Norwalk community and am excited for my future here! When not teaching, I love to spend time outside doing whatever I can in the sun. At Heidelberg, I was a four-year letter winner in volleyball and am currently the 8th grade girl’s coach which I am thrilled for. Volleyball is a huge passion of mine and I’m looking forward to helping young girls learn to love the game in the same place that I did! As the school year is now approaching, I am getting anxious to meet all of my co-workers and students for what will surely be a year to remember!

New Teacher Spotlight! Please join us in welcoming Mr. Horacio Quezada who will be teaching Junior High & High School Theology. Here is a short message from Mr. Quezada: I was born the 10th child of a very devout Catholic family of 12 children. I was raised in a small but beautiful and quaint town in Northern Mexico. Family necessities brought us all to California, and eventually God led me all this way to Norwalk, Ohio. Since I was little, I have always had a spiritual and intellectual inclination towards my Catholic faith. I hope that as a teacher I will be able to share my spiritual and intellectual interests with my students as well as their parents, while simultaneously learning from their own faith journey. I am excited to be a part of this new family!

New Teacher Spotlight! Please join us in welcoming Miss. Jacqui Mullins who will be in the 4th grade classroom. Here is a short message from Miss. Mullins: My name is Jacqui Mullins and this will be my first year teaching. I have played volleyball my entire life and my team won the state championship my senior year at Huron High School. Since then, I have been coaching at St. Paul for the past four years. I am very passionate about the game and enjoy sharing that passion with my players. I spent my childhood growing up in Collins but moved to Huron a few years ago where I currently reside. In my spare time, you can find me with my family, friends, or playing with my dog, Herm. I recently got engaged to my boyfriend, Tyler of 4 years. We are planning on getting married in the fall of 2022. I am so excited to meet my students and jump start my career!

Are you spending more time at home and looking for something to do? Do you have little ones at home looking to be creative? Participate in our Community Art Drive!
We've gotten several questions on how the community can show their appreciation for our local health care heroes or cheer up patients and residents at Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Norwalk Memorial Home, and the Carriage House. In order to minimize contact and practice social distancing, we’re excited to be doing a virtual art drive. Creations can be sent to ArtDrive@ftmc.com and they will be printed and displayed in various locations at Fisher-Titus. Some ideas to get you started are:
◊ Sidewalk chalk drawings
◊ Uplifting cards
◊ Window displays
Pose for a photo with your art or snap a photo of your creation on its own. We can’t wait to see what you come up with and we are so grateful for the support our community has shown us these last few weeks! Thank you!

Good Afternoon Flyer Family,
This afternoon Governor Dewine closed schools through May 1st with the expectation online learning would continue. This action has been taken to keep as many people safe and healthy as possible. We at Norwalk Catholic School are working to provide a detailed update later this week. Please know all of us are working tirelessly to provide support as best we can as we practice social distancing. As teachers make a good faith effort to provide instruction for our students, I ask students to continue to make a good faith effort in engaging in the learning the teachers are providing. Expectations for online learning will also be updated as part of this extended closure. Please pray for the health, healing, and safety of all people.

Here is a message from the Norwalk Catholic School president:
Good evening,
I want to let you know that I am working with other schools and the Huron County Health Department regarding concerns about the Corona virus. All of these agencies are coordinating efforts to ensure the health and safety of our community. I will share information as decisions are made. I have been working with the building leaders to plan for extended school closing if that occurs. This is an unprecedented event that may require unique responses.
Let's pray for all those suffering from any illness and ask that Christ guides our decision making as we move forward.
Thank you,
-Martin Linder

The Norwalk Police Department has released the following statement regarding the investigation of the incident shared yesterday afternoon. Please continue to stress to your children the potential risks presented by strangers. From the Norwalk Police Department: “The Norwalk Police Department has identified a sixty-three-year-old Norwalk woman as the person who attempted togive a ride to the 11-year-old Main Street School student last week. During the investigation information was received which lead investigators to believe this was a case of mistaken identity with no criminal intent on the part of the woman. The woman was contacted and interviewed. She was very embarrassed and apologetic. She was on her way to a rental property she owns when she saw a boy who she thought was her tenant’s grandson. She offered him a ride because of the cold weather. She even described getting out of her car, as the witness reported. When she arrived at her tenant’s residence, her grandson was already there, and she realized her mistake. She did not see the social media posts about the investigation yesterday and was not aware the incident was reported to the police. This case is unfounded, and the investigation closed. However, this type of situation presents parents and teachers with an opportunity to reinforce safety rules and talk about ways to avoid potentially dangerous situations.”

Friends for the Future Faithful Flyers
Our Kick-Off Weekend is Feb. 1st & 2nd.
Friends for the Future is our annual fund which provides necessary operating funds to the school for day-to-day operations. NCS is able to keep tuition affordable because of a "three-legged stool" financial model with roughly 1/3 of the cost to educate coming through tuition, 1/3 from supportive parishes, and 1/3 provided from generous donations to Friends for the Future and other programs.
Yes -- we do humbly ask you to consider 2 Commitments this year to Norwalk Catholic Schools. Please make a commitment to today and tomorrow.

The Norwalk Catholic School and Norwalk City School District received the following important announcement from the Norwalk Police Department:
“The Norwalk Police Department is investigating a report of a female who asked an eleven-year-old male to get into her vehicle on two separate days last week. The child’s father reported the incident to the Norwalk Police Department shortly after 3:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. The incidents happened on Wednesday, January 22 and Thursday, January 23, in the afternoon immediately after school when the child was walking home.
Information indicates the boy left the school and was walking home on East Main Street. A vehicle pulled into the parking lot at 124 East Main Street (Domino’s Corporate Offices). A female, described by a witness, as being in her late 50's or early 60's and having a medium build, medium height and shoulder length gray hair, then exited the car and said something to the boy. She got back into her car and proceeded through the Domino’s Store Resource Center parking lot, turning left (south) on Corwin Street. The incident remains under investigation. If anyone in the area of East Main Street and Corwin Street has video surveillance systems that may have captured the incident, or you have any information that could assist with the investigation, please contact the Norwalk Police Department at 419-668-3311 or 419-663-6780.
Parents are asked to remind their children never to go anyplace or get into a car with anyone without checking with a parent.
As a precautionary measure, additional officers, both uniform and plain-clothes, will be patrolling for the next several days.”
Please talk to your children about being safe around strangers. The Norwalk Catholic School and Norwalk City School District will remain in contact with the Norwalk Police Department throughout the investigation.
